This page will preserve and share photographs, documents, maps, newspaper clippings, and other historical materials that tell the story of Cumberland’s Dumbhundred neighborhood. Future additions may feature historic homes, streets, churches, businesses, neighborhood events, former residents, and changes to the community over time.
Whenever possible, each item will include a date or approximate period, a description of the people or location shown, and credit to the photographer, owner, collection, or institution that provided it. “Then and Now” comparisons may also be included to show how familiar neighborhood scenes have changed—or remained recognizable—through the years.
HDAC welcomes assistance from residents, former residents, property owners, and local historians who may have photographs or historical materials to share. Digital copies may be submitted for consideration, allowing the original materials to remain safely with their owners while helping preserve the history of the Dumbhundred for future generations.

The 1895–96 Cumberland city directory records several Dumbhundred residents and their occupations. Jacob Hausman, a laborer, lived at 122 Columbia Street. John C. Heier, a printer, and John G. Heier, an engineer, lived at 85 Columbia Street. The page also lists John S. Hedding, a book canvasser, at 69 Bedford Street, and John Helfrey, a cigar maker, at 7 Valley Street.
